MPR Chairman Bambang Soesatyo Bans Smart Suitcases from Entering Aircraft Cabins

Crowded on social media, smart suitcases that can be used are prohibited from entering the cabin. MPR Chairman Bambang Soesatyo reminded airlines to follow international standards.

This is so that producers, distributors and consumers no longer feel confused regarding the applicable regulations. According to aviation regulations, only smart luggage that can enter the aircraft cabin has a removable lithium battery in accordance with IATA regulations.

“With this explanation, it is hoped that there will be no more confusion from the public. Including Airwheel suitcases (smart luggage) because they have met the requirements to be included in the airline cabin,” said Bamsoet, Bambang Soesatyo’s nickname, who is also Deputy General Chair of the Golkar Party, in released to the media and quoted Monday (22/1/23).

Bamsoet also appealed to smart luggage manufacturers to continue to be committed to marketing their products in accordance with the requirements as stipulated in the provisions regulated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Bamsoet asked them to uphold the safety and security priorities of these products when carried on flights.

The 20th Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives and former Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives for Law, Human Rights and Security, explained that there are several provisions for smart luggage that can be carried in airplane cabin baggage. Among other things, smart luggage that can enter the cabin only has a removable lithium battery according to IATA regulations.

The dimensions of smart luggage must comply with cabin baggage regulations. For the Airbus A320 the dimensions are L 56 cm x W 36 cm x H 23 cm with a maximum weight of 7 kilograms and for the ATR72-600 aircraft the dimensions are L 41 cm x W 34 cm x H 17 cm with a maximum weight of 7 kilograms.
