Mozilla shows the new Firefox with Proton

A new Proton user interface has been prepared for Firefox for many months. With the upcoming release of this new version of Firefox, Michal Stanke on Mozilla.cz is summarizing the details. He adds that Proton will not be such a revolution as the Photon look of its time (more than 3 years ago) and this time everything will be done without API changes (after switching to WebExtensions, this is done).

In summary, the appearance of Proton will more visually separate the panels from the bar below them, the active panel will have a more pronounced separation. A new indication of the audio playback of that panel is running. By the way, the originally planned removal of the compact display mode was not in Proton, but it will not be very supported from now on. The use of icons in the interface is also changing. The options × Preferences on Linux and Windows will be unified, now it will simply be Settings (Preferences will remain on macOS, Apple’s terminology is different).

Visually different will be the newly opened panel (larger search box, less space for tiles, which will now be called shortcuts). After last year’s update of Firefox’s own printing interface, new modal dialogs for various actions will be added. More details and a personal opinion of Michal Stanke after 4 months of use is available at Mozilla.cz.
