Motorola showcased its vertical display smartphone concept – Tablet & Phone

Ahead of MWC, Motorola showed off a smartphone concept with a retractable screen. The device has a pOLED screen that wraps around the back, which slides up and down with a motor.

The concept device was developed by the Motorola 312 Labs business unit. Officially, it doesn’t have a name, but on the back of the device it says the name “Razr”. When folded, it has a 5-inch display with a 15:9 ratio, which makes for a compact case. Previous rollable concepts like the OPPO X 2021 often had a horizontal form factor, but with the Rizr the screen rises vertically. A plastic OLED display wraps around the bottom of the device, maneuvered to slide up to a 6.5-inch display with a 22:9 aspect ratio. Motorola doesn’t mention screen resolution, but in the hand, the sharpness feels almost like a smartphone with a Full HD panel. The screen has a fairly smooth top coat, which also shows a few scratches on the concept device shown.

Motorola calls the Rizr the most versatile 5-inch smartphone in the world. After all, views allow for some interesting usage scenarios. You can move the screen in and out manually by pressing the side button on the top right, but the screen can also automatically adjust to the content on the screen, which works on draft devices that are featured in two apps, Youtube and Gmail, where, for example, you watching videos In landscape mode causes the screen to appear automatically.

The front camera is hidden under the screen

Since part of the screen covers the back of the device, it can be used as a notification screen, similar to the small front screen on foldable devices like the Motorola Razr or Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4. You can also use it as a viewfinder for the rear camera. Moto Rizr also has a front camera, but it’s well hidden. Not only can the rotary screen swipe up, but a very small amount can also be swiped down, revealing a tiny camera at the bottom of the screen. For example, the Rizr screen doesn’t need any holes or cutouts.

Since this is a concept device, no other Rizr specifications are known. It’s also unclear whether Motorola wants to release a similar device in the future, and how much it will cost.
