Motorola Unveils New Edge Series Phones with Classic Wooden Back Design

Reviving a Classic Design Feature

Motorola is introducing three new phones in its Edge series, presenting a nostalgic design element from a decade ago: a wooden back panel. The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, offering the highest specifications among the trio, is the only one with a “real wood” back panel option. However, Motorola also offers the peach fuzz vegan leather support, which looks impressively appealing. While the initial launch will occur outside of the US in the following weeks, Motorola has confirmed its commitment to expanding the Edge family in North America in the same year.

Impressive Features

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is equipped with the latest Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 chipset, delivering high performance to users. The device boasts a 6.7-inch OLED display with a remarkable refresh rate of up to 144Hz, a feature that has received recognition from Pantone. Motorola has achieved Pantone validation, ensuring authenticity in simulating a wide range of real-world Pantone colors for the display and camera.

Unmatched Capabilities

Designed to meet the demands of flagship phones in 2024, the Ultra model boasts an IP68 rating for resistance against water immersion and offers wireless charging support. The device features a 50-megapixel stabilized main camera, a 64-megapixel telephoto lens with optical stabilization, and a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens that functions as a macro lens as well.

Other Edge Series Models

In addition to the Ultra model, Motorola presents the Edge 50 Pro and the Edge 50 Fusion. The Pro model, positioned just below the Ultra, houses a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset, and shares the IP68 rating for water resistance. However, wireless charging is exclusively available in the Pro model. Notably, the Pro variant includes an additional 10-megapixel stabilized 3x telephoto lens. All three phones leverage AI capabilities, including Google’s Magic Editor in Photos. Although users can access the first 10 saved edits for free, a Google One subscription is required for further access.

Awaited US Launch

Motorola’s strategic approach involves releasing Edge devices in the US after the international launch. The online store currently offers two Edge devices, and the expansion of offerings in the US anticipates all three arriving stateside, providing users with a wider selection.

Distinctive Design Options

The Edge 50 Fusion showcases a hot pink vegan suede option, which seemingly suits the preferences of T-Mobile users. On the other hand, the Edge 50 Pro comes in black and lavender vegan leather variants. Although the availability of phones and colors in the US remains uncertain, the nordic wood finish of the 50 Ultra model is expected to make a lasting impression. Harkening back to the charm of the wood-paneled Moto X, it presents a unique and appealing aesthetic.

International Pricing and Availability

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra will retail at €999, followed by the Edge 50 Pro at €699, and the Edge 50 Fusion at €399. Initial sales will begin in select regions across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Oceania.
