Mother in Florida loses two children to coronavirus: ‘It’s so quiet in the house’

Her son Byron (20) suddenly became unwell one morning in June. He had trouble breathing and was rushed to the hospital. When Monete got there, it was already too late. “The doctors came out and told me he had a cardiac arrest.”

A few days later her daughter Mychaela (22) also fell ill. She complained of a headache and fever. She fought the virus for days, but eventually died eleven days after her brother’s death.

No goodbyes

“I never thought this would happen to me. To lose my children at such a young age,” Monete tells Sky News. Especially at night she cannot sleep. “Then it is so quiet in the house.”

What also hurt her a lot is that she was never able to say goodbye to her children because she was not allowed to come near them because of the virus. “I couldn’t be there to speak into their ear and tell them to fight, fight and fight.”

Medical problems

Byron and Mychaela are buried side by side. According to a pathologist, the two had underlying medical problems, including obesity and asthma.

The death toll in the U.S. state is currently rising rapidly. Florida reported 173 more corona deaths in one day this week – a record.
