Mortality rose sharply in October – Novinky.cz

In the long run, the number of deaths in a single week is around 2,000 during the year, and is usually higher during flu epidemics.

Current data show that the number of deaths began to deviate from the long-term average in the second week of September. At first, the increase was modest, but by mid-October, it was almost a third more dead than usual.

40. 2 363 2 102
41. 2 572 2 109

A closer look shows that mortality in the under-40 age group is virtually unchanged. In the group of people between the ages of 40 and 64, an above-average number of deaths is already apparent at the end of the period. This is even more evident in people between the ages of 65 and 84, and a markedly higher mortality is obvious at first glance in the group at 85 years of age.

While in the previous five years, an average of 608 people over the age of 85 died in the 42nd week, this year it was 909 people.

The number of deaths will continue to rise

The high number of deaths in a single week is likely to rise further. In the first half of November alone, more people died of coronavirus deaths than in full October.

Originally, statisticians published mortality data on a quarterly basis; during the spring wave of the epidemic, they switched to a weekly periodicity. Nevertheless, the data is delayed by several weeks to be relevant.

“The published data cover those calendar weeks for which the number of processed statistical reports on deaths is evaluated as sufficiently complete for the publication of preliminary numbers of deaths,” the CZSO reminded. At the same time, he pointed out that the population is gradually aging and the number of seniors is growing.
