Mortality from COVID-19 in the world is underestimated by half, and in Ukraine – by three. Study

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused nearly 6.9 million deaths worldwide, double the number officially recorded. In Ukraine, the statistics may be three times underestimated.

Such data were obtained by scientists of the independent research organization “Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation” at the University of Washington School of Medicine (Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, IHME), said on website institutions.

“This analysis shows that the actual toll is much greater. Understanding the true number of deaths from COVID-19 helps us assess the magnitude of this global crisis and provides valuable insight to policymakers who are developing response and recovery plans,” said IHME Director Dr. Chris Murray.

Real mortality from COVID-19 in Ukraine is three times more than statistics

Experts concluded that data on mortality from coronavirus are underestimated in almost all countries of the world. Many deaths from COVID-19 go unreported as countries only report deaths in hospitals or in patients with confirmed infection. In many cities, weak health reporting systems and poor access to health care exacerbate this problem, the study said.

For example, more than 905,000 people have died in the United States, although only 574,000 deaths are officially registered. The data on deaths are almost three times underestimated in India (654 395 deaths against the official 221 181), in Mexico (617 127 against 217 694). And in Russia, almost five times (593 610 against 109 334).

Mortality rates are 10 or more times underestimated in Japan (108 320 actual versus official 10 390), Egypt (170 041 versus 13 529), Kazakhstan (81 696 versus 5 620).

The statistics are one and a half times underestimated in Italy (175 832 versus 121 257), 2.2 times in Poland (149 855 versus 68 237), 1.4 times in Great Britain (209 661 versus 150 519).
