More wind farms at sea? Then faster procedures are needed, builders say

More offshore wind turbines are needed to achieve the tightened climate targets and also to become less dependent on Russia for energy supply. To realize this, Minister Jetten of Climate and Energy Today known to invest billions in three new wind farms. More energy from wind turbines at sea, but is that a feasible idea?

The cabinet wants an additional 10.7 gigawatts of capacity by 2030, good for the power supply of about 10 million households. The wind turbines that are already there provide a total capacity of approximately 2.5 gigawatts. It was already planned to increase that capacity by about 9 gigawatts until 2030.

Minister Jetten wants to get 1.7 billion euros from the climate fund for the connection to the onshore power grid. Companies and investors pay the costs of building the wind turbines.

Delay

“We support the cabinet to double it, but the big question is: how?”, says Joël Meggelaars, wind energy specialist at Orsted, the world market leader in building wind farms at sea. According to him, the biggest delay is in the procedures to obtain the necessary permits.

Arnoud Kuis, director of Offshore Wind at Van Oord, sees this too: “Scaling up is necessary, but to realize this we need clarity in the plans. So speed in the permits and construction procedures. Only then is it possible.”

When asked, Minister Jetten tells the NOS that he will hold talks with companies that develop the wind farms. “In the coming period, we will have to look at how we can start projects more easily and faster. Not only at sea, but also on land.”

Where will the new wind farms be located?
