Monday will be a historic day for train passengers from Mechelen-Nekkerspoel. After more than twenty years, they have a full station again from Monday. For more than four years, the monument has been restored and renovated.

The station on the Ontvoeringsplein dates from 1912 and is protected as a monument. In 1997, the NMBS decided to sell the building in neo-Flemish-Renaissance style, but bought it back in 2009. In March 2016, a contractor commissioned by the railway company began a thorough overhaul of the station. It is now ready. “The station building has been completely restored both inside and outside,” says Bart Crols, spokesman for the NMBS.

The facade was sandblasted, it got a new roof, insulation and new floors everywhere. The historic original staircase has also been carefully restored. “In short, a transformation into a contemporary station building with increased comfort for travelers,” says Crols. The ticket offices have been relocated to the historic station and travelers can wait for their train in a stately and comfortable waiting room with sanitary facilities. The project cost 2.6 million euros.

“With 2 S and 2 IC connections per hour, the station is well connected in every direction with Antwerp and Brussels,” says Bart Crols.
