The largest country in Latin America recorded this heavy toll, the day when shopping centers reopened in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, the two largest cities in the country.
A symbolic threshold crossed. Brazil recorded, Thursday, June 11, more than 40,000 deaths related to the new coronavirus, according to the latest report from the country’s Ministry of Health. This country of 212 million inhabitants has recorded 40,919 deaths, including 1,239 in the last 24 hours. Sao Paulo surpassed the 10,000 death mark for the first time (10,115), compared to 7,363 for Rio de Janeiro. Only the United States and Great Britain reported more deaths from Covid-19.
Brazil has also exceeded 800,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus contamination, including 30,412 in the past twenty-four hours, the Ministry of Health reported. This is the largest number of infections in the world, again after the United States. However, most experts believe that official figures are largely underestimated due to insufficient testing.
