More than 4,000 new infections per day

The number of infections continues to rise to more than 4,000 new corona cases per day. This is evident from the preliminary figures from health institute Sciensano on Tuesday.

The average number of infections rose by 41 percent between 13 and 19 March, to 4,060 per day. A total of 839,238 people have already been infected with the virus and 22,728 people have died from the effects of covid-19. The share of positive tests also continues to rise, to 7.5 percent (+0.9 percent).

The increase takes place throughout Belgium, with the exception of Walloon Brabant, where infections rose by 68.6 percent compared to a week earlier (419 infections compared to 1,069). Luxembourg (57.2 percent) and Namur (55.5 percent) follow. In Flanders, it rose fastest in Limburg (44.1 percent), followed by East Flanders (43.3 percent), Flemish Brabant (42.9 percent), West Flanders (42 percent) and Antwerp (37.8 per cent). In Brussels there is an increase of 36.8 percent.

In the week of March 16-22, an average of 203.7 people were hospitalized every day, an increase of more than a fifth (+22 percent) from the previous seven days. There are now 2,359 covid patients in the hospital, 588 of whom are in intensive care.

An average of 25 people died every day between 13 and 19 March, 1.7 percent more than a week earlier. Despite the increase, the mortality rate is currently hovering around 25, as it has been since the end of February. Compared to two weeks ago, the mortality rate has also decreased by 1.7 percent.

977,985 people have already received at least one dose of a vaccine, representing 10.6 percent of the adult population. 442,946 of them (4.8 percent) have already received a second dose and are therefore fully vaccinated.
