Some bodies have been recovered, the rest has been swallowed by the sea. Twelve others were rescued after their boat sank. Boats with migrants departing from this area usually go to the Spanish Canary Islands.

More than 40,000 migrants, mainly traveling via Morocco, arrived in Spain by sea in 2021, according to the latest figures from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. This also includes migrants arriving via the Canary Islands or the Balearic Islands, the archipelago to which Mallorca also belongs.

According to Caminando Fronteras, some 4,400 migrants died or disappeared while crossing the sea to Spain in 2021. That’s the highest number since the organization began tracking the numbers in 2015.
