more than 2700 new cases, average decreases slightly

The number of new corona cases is still falling, but at a slower pace. The line gets flatter and flatter.

Between Thursday and Friday mornings 2718 positive tests reported to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). That is slightly more than in the previous days, but it is common for the number of new cases to rise during the week. Last Friday there were just over 2900 positive tests.

The 2,718 positive tests translate into 15.6 for every 100,000 Dutch people. For the fortieth day in a row, the Netherlands is above the so-called signal value. More than 7 positive tests in 100,000 people will set off alarm bells and may require action. From September to June, the Netherlands was above that limit for 272 consecutive days.

In the past seven days, 16,368 positive tests have been registered, an average of 2,338 per day. In the week up to and including Thursday, an average of 2365 infections per day had come to light. It is the lowest level since July 8, more than a month ago.

Amsterdam had the most new cases. In the capital, 202 residents were told that they had contracted the corona virus. There were 160 positive tests in Rotterdam and 105 in The Hague, followed by Utrecht (77) and Almere (46). No one tested positive in 31 municipalities.

Deaths

The number of reported deaths rose by 6. This concerns residents of the municipalities of Rotterdam, Venlo, Hilversum, Duiven, Berkelland and Losser. Just because their death has been reported now, doesn’t mean they died in the past day. It can sometimes take a while for a death to be registered.

42 deaths have been reported in the last week, an average of 6 per day. About a month ago, at the start of the current wave, there were about 10 reports of deaths per week.

Hospitals

For the first time in just over a week, fewer than 200 corona patients are in intensive care. There are now 196 people in those hospital rooms because of covid-19, the disease caused by the corona virus.

Fourteen IC beds have become available in the past day. It is the biggest drop since July 8.

The number of corona patients in the nursing wards did increase slightly last day, from 439 to 450, but in general the line is still going down. At the beginning of August, more than 500 people were in those halls because of corona.

A total of 646 people are now hospitalized due to Covid-19. That is the lowest number in more than two weeks. It is the fourth consecutive day on which the total number of patients admitted has fallen.
