Brazil is the hardest hit country in the region

The hardest hit within the region is Brazil, with 3.5 million infections recorded and around 112,300 fatalities. Behind are Peru and Mexico. In Peru there were around 558,400 recorded cases of infection and around 26,800 counted deaths by Friday night. In Mexico there were around 537,000 registered infections and just under 58,500 deaths.

Beijing residents no longer have to wear a mask outdoors after a decision by the authorities. With the lifting of the mask requirement, the regulation in the fight against the corona virus was further relaxed after the Chinese capital had not reported any new infections for 13 days in a row. Even so, the majority of people continued to wear mouth and nose protection on Friday. Some Beijingers said it made them feel safer. Others stressed that the social pressure to wear a mask is still great.
