More than 200,000 Americans who have tested positive for the coronavirus have died, according to research from Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday.
In the past two weeks, most of the infected deaths were reported in the states of Texas, Florida and California. In those states, the most positive people tested are also registered.
Since April, the United States has been the country with the most infected deaths worldwide. The number of positive corona tests, over 6.8 million, is also nowhere higher in the world.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump praised the US corona policy. “It hardly affects anyone. It’s amazing,” Trump said at a campaign meeting in Ohio Monday night. According to Trump, the virus mainly affects elderly people with heart problems and other conditions.
At the start of the corona crisis, the US president said maximum 200,000 people with the virus are expected. That number is likely to be exceeded as the number of infections in the country continues to increase.
Large numbers of residents and tests
The high figures in the US can be partly explained by the high population. With approximately 330 million inhabitants, the US is the world’s second largest country after China and India.
A relatively large number of tests are conducted in the United States. According to official data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 100 million tests have already been taken. That’s partly because some Americans, such as health care workers, are tested multiple times.
Worldwide, more than 965,000 people have died who were infected with the virus. After the US, Brazil (more than 137,000), India (almost 89,000) and Mexico (almost 74,000) record the largest number of infected deaths.
