DSince the start of the year, more than 14,000 people have contracted dengue fever and eleven have died from it in Thailand, Director of the Department of Disease Control Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai said on Sunday.

Quoting a report from the Epidemiological Bureau, between January 1 and May 25 of this year, 14,136 people contracted dengue fever in Thailand, a rate of 21.28 per 100,000 people. During the same period, eleven died from the disease, representing a proportion of 0.02 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The five provinces with the highest number of dengue cases per 100,000 population are Rayong (73), Chaiyaphum (58.13), Khon Kaen (53.83), Mae Hong Son (37.87) and Nakhon Ratchasima (36.92).

Regionally, the number of dengue cases per 100,000 people was 25.67 in the Northeast, 22.04 in the Center, 18.42 in the South and 14.14 in the North.

Suwannachai said that conditions are now on the rise, with the onset of the rainy season which favors the stagnation of water and therefore the spread of the disease.

In an effort to control the epidemic, teams have been deployed to spray repellents to kill mosquitoes. In addition, the population is called upon to cooperate by eliminating the breeding grounds for larvae in their communities, in particular by emptying the containers which contain standing water, and by sleeping under mosquito nets.
