More than 13 million people vote corona proof for the House of Representatives | Elections

Monday and Tuesday there are about 1,600 places for voters to go to, Wednesday around 9,200. Most polling stations are open between 7:30 am and 9:00 pm. In recent weeks, more than 2.4 million voters aged 70 or older have already been able to vote by post.

The number of municipalities is due to municipal reclassifications, a lot less than in the elections in 2017. At that time there were still 388 municipalities, apart from the three special municipalities in the Caribbean in the Caribbean (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba). The number of participating parties is 37. That is a post-war record. 28 parties participated in 1971, 1981 and 2017. The absolute record was set in the 1922 elections, when 53 parties participated. The number of candidates is 1579. In 2017, 1116 people were candidates and in 2012 972.

The number of Dutch nationals living abroad who registered to vote is almost 93,000. That is considerably more than in the previous elections. In 2017, just over 80,000 Dutch nationals were registered as voters abroad, and in 2012 over 48,000.

Special measures apply to all polling stations in the country to keep the risk of contamination with the corona virus as small as possible. For example, pencils, voting booths, tables and other objects are regularly cleaned in the polling station. In some municipalities, all voters are given their own red pencil that they can take home afterwards. And there are ‘cough screens’ between the voters and the members of the polling stations. Voters can go to many special places, in the open air, in so-called drive-thru’s, in tents and also at stations to cast their votes. Residents of Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius are also allowed to vote. As special Dutch municipalities, they are participating in the parliamentary elections for the third time.

You can vote with a valid voting pass and valid ID. An ID is valid for voting if it has not expired for more than 5 years on March 17, 2021. If someone wants to vote in another municipality, this is allowed, but with a pre-requested voter pass.
