More jobs for people with disabilities, government is lagging behind NOW

Last year, employers exceeded the goal of creating additional jobs for people with disabilities. In doing so, the government is lagging behind business, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment reports Thursday.

In total, more than 61,000 positions for people with a work disability were created in 2019, more than 6,000 more than the target.

The business community exceeded the agreement of 40,000 extra jobs by far and reached 51,000. The government was left behind: there should have been fifteen thousand extra jobs and there were just under ten thousand.

State Secretary Tamara van Ark says it is disappointing that the government has failed, especially because this has already happened for the fourth year in a row. She will “remind government and education employers of their responsibilities,” she writes in a letter to the House of Representatives.

Keep an eye on the effects of the corona crisis

Incidentally, the figures are for 2019 and the effects of the corona crisis are therefore not yet known. Van Ark writes that people with an occupational disability are extra vulnerable and will take extra measures if necessary to prevent this group from ending up without work.

By 2026, the private sector and the government must have created an additional 125,000 jobs. Agreements about this were made in 2013.
