More immigrants and births: population is growing again | Inland

This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). In the third quarter of 2020, the population increased by 40,000 people. In total, the population grew by 90.4 thousand inhabitants between January and September 2021.

According to the CBS, population growth is mainly caused by foreign migration. “The difference between the number of immigrants and the number of emigrants grew by 48.7 thousand inhabitants in the third quarter,” writes the statistical office. “In 2020 there were still 29.9 thousand.”

Migrants

The figures authority also notes that more immigrants arrived this year and that fewer people left the Netherlands at the same time. “In particular, more 18 to 25-year-olds were added through migration than in previous years. In the summer months, the number of migrants in this age group is usually relatively high.”

Over the whole of 2021, 184 thousand migrants came to the Netherlands up to and including September. At the same time, 106 thousand people left abroad.

According to the CBS, the largest group of migrants consists of Syrians (on balance 8,000), followed by Poles (7,600), the former Soviet Union (4,600) and Turkey (4,300). In addition, the trend of a declining British population in the Netherlands, which has started since the Brexit of 2020, continues.

A higher birth rate also contributes to the growth of the Dutch population. In total, 7,000 more children were born. According to Statistics Netherlands, the number of births was particularly high in March and April than in previous years.
