More elderly people in healthcare died during the heatwave | Inland

A total of 1,307 people died in care and nursing homes in the week of 10 to 16 August. That is over 350 more than in a normal summer week. During the heat wave it was more than 30 degrees outside for days, with peaks of well above 35 degrees. The nights were also exceptionally warm.

According to Statistics Netherlands, there was no increase in mortality in people younger than 50 years. The older people are, the greater the extra mortality was during the heat wave. “The increase in mortality is related to the high temperature, the mortality from corona recorded by the RIVM was low,” said the statisticians.
