More corona patients admitted to hospital

The total number of covid patients admitted to Belgian hospitals continues to rise slightly. The stabilization of the number of corona infections also appears to be continuing in the meantime.

This is evident from the most recent figures from Sciensano. The figures on the number of occupied beds have been slightly up again for several days. Yesterday, 3,276 beds were occupied by confirmed covid patients, of which 723 were in intensive care units. The day before yesterday there were only 3,213. Compared to a week ago, there is still a decrease: 753 more covid patients were then in hospital.

The daily average of the number of hospital admissions over one week also indicates that there is an increase again. While this daily average, in which weekend effects have been flattened, yesterday was 188.7 admissions per day, today it has risen to 191.9.

The decline in the average number of infections continues to stagnate. In the week to December 4, the decline was limited to 9 percent on a weekly basis. There is still an average of 2,133 new infections per day. The data from the past weekend is not yet complete.

Measures

If this pace continues, the number of new infections will not drop below the alarm threshold of 800 per day until sometime in late January or early February. The second necessary factor, reducing the number of hospital admissions to less than 75 per day, is not getting any closer for the time being. Only if both indicators remain below the predetermined threshold for three weeks, a relaxation of the corona measures is possible.

Deaths

The average number of deaths in the past week is still clearly declining. The average had dropped to 105.6 per day on December 4. That is a decrease of 18.6 percent on a weekly basis.

Temporary phenomenon?

Virologist Steven Van Gucht said on a Monday press conference of the Crisis Center even more that we ‘above all should not let ourselves be discouraged by this delay’. It is still possible that this is a temporary phenomenon. The past weeks have shown that we can significantly reduce infections with the current set of measures. So let us go a step further. Take care of the details, they can make a big difference. ‘
