NIJMEGEN – Mayor Hubert Bruls of Nijmegen has immediately locked two cafés. It concerns the Bascafé and TweeKeerBellen. “But keep in mind that more cafes will close.”

The number of corona infections in the Waalstad, especially among the nightlife crowd, is increasing rapidly. Bruls says there will be a larger investigation into several catering establishments. He will also talk to the Horeca Nederland department of Nijmegen to point out the corona guidelines again. There will also be many more checks and Bruls wants to give extra attention to students. “Because we are dealing with three pubs with a specific student audience.” Café Van Rijn was also closed earlier.

He says that he does not want to accuse anyone in advance of breaking the rules, but says he knows the stories of catering establishments that do not take the rules so closely. “Hope that people who have said in recent months that the measures are not necessary will now reconsider.”

‘These numbers will add up’
According to Bruls, 17 infections can be linked to the Bascafé, which already received a warning in July. TweeKeerBellen deals with 11 corona cases: that cafe had to previously closed for violation of the rules. “These are the numbers we got this afternoon, you don’t have to be a psychic that these numbers will continue to increase. They are all people who got sick in early September after being there. ”

This Thursday, 33 residents of Nijmegen were tested positive. The day before there were 22. A total of 123 infections were added in Nijmegen in a week. The city is thus becoming increasingly dark on the contamination maps of the RIVM.

The positive corona tests are mainly found among young people. They generally do not become seriously ill from the virus themselves, but the fear is that they can transmit corona to other age groups and, in particular, vulnerable fellow citizens who could become seriously ill from it.

Other pubs closed earlier
At café Van Rijn it appeared that initially ten and now more than fifty infections can be linked to that pub. As a result, more than 200 people had to be quarantined. Bruls was rather fierce against Van Rijn, because that popular café would ignore all corona rules, especially after midnight. Wednesday the manager of Van Rijn offered openly apologize and he promised to improve.

Also Samson cafe had to lock earlier because visitors violated the corona rules. Like TwiceCalls, which now has to be closed again.
