More breathing space on the IC, but fear of second corona wave

RTL Nieuws was given permission to film in the Albert Schweitzer hospital in Dordrecht. It provides a unique insight into the IC, at the heart of the corona outbreak.

The hospital staff here are holding their hearts. They fear a second corona wave if the government broadens the rules. “I hope we don’t get that scenario again,” said IC nurse Leandra van de Nadort. And, says a colleague: “We still need this IC capacity for months.”

Some 45 corona patients have been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Albert Schweitzer hospital since the outbreak. Sometimes they spend weeks fighting for their lives.

So far, four people have died in the Dordrecht hospital. Some of the patients who are corona-free have returned home. Others recover step by step on the IC itself, such as 63-year-old Hetty van der Pijl. She is grateful for what the healthcare staff do. “We’re not going to make it without those people.”
