Moon calls on Biden to continue dialogue with North Korea

SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday said it would be beneficial for US President-elect Joe Biden to engage in talks with North Korea by building on the progress made by outgoing President Donald Trump with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Joe Biden will settle in the White House on Wednesday amid a deadlock in negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula in exchange for easing sanctions against North Korea.

Moon Jae-in, who has offered to mediate in the talks, said he intends to have an early opportunity to advocate dialogue with North Korea as one of the Biden administration’s priorities for foreign policy, with the aim of building on the agreement reached in 2018 between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

“The inauguration of the Biden administration will mark a turning point to relaunch the dialogue between the United States and North Korea, the South-North dialogue,” he said at a press conference for the new year, saying that progress was possible if “concrete measures” were mentioned in the negotiations.

As Kim Jong-un called this month at the ruling party’s congress in Pyongyang for a strengthening of North Korean military capabilities, it is even more important to reopen negotiations on a peace agreement, Moon Jae added. -in.
