Monster SUVs are coming back – as an electric car

General Motors discontinued the Hummer brand in 2010. But now it is coming back, at least in the form of cars: GMC, the Group’s core brand, wants to bring a Hummer EV. Correctly read: The martial SUVs of yore are electrified.

The GMC Hummer EV is said to combine “bold design and remarkable capabilities”. The car will be featured in a video titled “Silent Revolution” during the Super Bowl opening game this weekend.

The spot contrasts the expected performance data of the first fully electric truck from GMC with the silent movement that the electric car offers. GMC is already providing a few key data:

  • 1,000 hp
  • over 15,500 Nm of torque
  • 0 to 100 km / h in about 3 seconds

The almost incredible torque value obviously does not refer to the engine, but to the torque on the wheel. But even so, the values are impressive. However, there is still no data on battery capacity and range and on technology.

There is still no picture of the car as a whole. The teaser photo (picture above) only shows the grill, which reminds of the models H1, H2 and H3 with its vertical chrome struts. There are also illuminated elements on which the Hummer model lettering appears.

The GMC Hummer EV will only be properly revealed and seen live on May 20, 2020. It will later be built in Michigan at the General Motors assembly plant in Detroit-Hamtramck. When the car comes onto the market has not yet been announced. It also remains uncertain whether he will come to Europe.

The 30-second television commercial is scheduled to air in the second quarter of the football game. The spot illuminates the expected performance of GMC’s all-electric super truck, which will deliver remarkable values in terms of power, torque and acceleration, while offering incredible on-and off-road capabilities.

This is contrasted with the greatly reduced noise and zero emissions of the electric vehicle. This is the first time that the cars are rightly named Hummer: to hum means yes in German to hum, which suits electric cars better than V8 engines.

With the Hummer EV, GMC has obviously declared war on the Tesla Cybertruck (an electric pick-up) and the R1S and R1T models from Rivian. All of these cars combine a more or less martial exterior with “gentle” electrical technology.
