Monkeys infected with covid-19 developed immunity to the disease

The primates developed mild to moderate symptoms and took approximately 2 weeks to recover.

A group of scientists from Peking Union Medical College published a study in the journal Science, where they conducted an experiment with rhesus macaques, due to their similarities to humans, to find out if immunity was generated in the short term.

Six macaques were infected in the trachea with a dose of SARS-CoV-2. The primates developed mild to moderate symptoms and took approximately 2 weeks to recover.

28 days after the first infection, 4 of the 6 monkeys received another dose of virus, but this time, beyond a slight increase in temperature, “showed no signs of reinfection with the same strain of SARS-CoV-2 during their initial recovery period ”, explained the scientists.

The peak viral load in the monkeys was reached three days after the first infection, the researchers discovered after taking several samples.

Thanks to numerous analyzes, they observed a stronger immune response after the first infection, particularly with so-called neutralizing antibodies (which block the virus).

“What could have protected the nonhuman primates themselves against reinfection in the short term.”

More experiments will be necessary to see how long this immune defense is maintained.
