Jakarta –
The World Health Organization (WHO) recorded at least 780 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the world as of Sunday (5/6/2022). This number is reported outside of endemic countries such as West and Central Africa.
According to him, the level of global health risk related to monkeypox is still in the moderate category. WHO assesses it is very possible that the number of cases is higher than reported due to limited tests in the laboratory.
“It is very likely that other countries will identify cases and there will be further spread of the virus,” the health agency added.
Of the total monkeypox cases, some have been hospitalized but most have only been isolated to observe the development of symptoms. Details of monkeypox cases outside endemic countries are as follows:
- UK: 207 cases
- Spain: 156 cases
- Portugal: 138 cases
- Canada: 58 cases
- Germany: 57 cases
In addition to Europe and North America, Argentina, Australia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates have recorded outbreaks of monkeypox, but each has only recorded one case. One case of monkeypox in a non-endemic country is considered an epidemic.
“Several countries reported that a new generation of cases no longer emerged only among known contacts of previously confirmed cases, suggesting that the chain of transmission was missed through circulating undetected viruses,” the WHO said.
“While current risks to human health and the general public remain low, public health risks could be high if this virus seizes the opportunity to establish itself in non-endemic countries as a widespread human pathogen,” the WHO said.
