Monkeypox Outbreak Recorded 257 Cases in the World

World Health Organization (WHO) reported as many as 257 cases monkey pox confirmed and 120 suspected cases in 23 non-endemic countries.

This was conveyed by WHO in an update on the monkeypox case on Sunday (29/5).

To date, no deaths from monkeypox in non-endemic countries have been reported.

“Since 2017, several deaths from monkeypox in West Africa have been linked to young age and untreated HIV infection,” the WHO said. CNN.

WHO also said the level of risk of monkeypox in the global community was not too high.

“Given this is the first time that cases of monkeypox have been reported concurrently in a number of different countries, and with no known epidemiological link with endemic countries,” the WHO added.

The public health risk could be high if the virus Monkeypox spread to groups at higher risk of severe disease such as young children and people with compromised immune systems.

WHO urges healthcare providers to pay attention to possible symptoms such as rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, headache, backache, muscle aches and weakness.

In addition, WHO also highlighted the transmission of the disease that was reported to occur among homosexual men. WHO asks the public not to stigmatize homosexual groups.

Monkeypox is a rare infectious disease caused by the Monkeypox virus. Generally, this disease causes relatively mild flu-like symptoms.

Symptoms will then develop into a rash and blistering lesions all over the body. This disease usually lasts for 2-4 weeks.

Although not included in the category of sexually transmitted diseases, monkeypox can be spread through close contact, including during sexual intercourse.
