Monkeypox cases on the rise in Occitanie, France

The number of monkey pox patients is on the rise in Occitanie. 244 cases have been identified in the region, the second most affected in France.

The number of cases is increasing in the region. 244 patients were listed by the French Public Health Agency in its last update on August 16.

With 244 cases, Occitanie is the second region most affected by monkeypox in France, behind Ile-de-France and its 1 642 casand ahead of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and its 213 cas.

In total, 2 749 cas are listed in France on August 16, 2022.

This viral infectious disease is caused by Monkeypox. A virus transmitted by rodents to humans, then between humans via droplets or close contact. The symptoms are similar to those of smallpox but the disease is less severe.

The first case was diagnosed in Occitania almost three months ago, on Wednesday May 25, 2022. 151 cas were already counted on July 26, against 244 this July 26. A figure that seems to be stabilizing for the moment.

Currently, the cases identified in France are mainly adult men (1.1% of women, i.e. 29 cases and 4 children under 15). Only 3% of them were hospitalized because of this infection and no deaths were reported.

To stem the spread of this virus, which is mainly transmitted sexually, the French Public Health Agency strongly recommends vaccination for people who have had risky contact with sick people or people at risk (sex workers, men with multiple partners with other men, professionals working in places of sexual consumption).
