Money rain for migrants: 170 million for reception

Among the many side effects of locks and forced closures generated byCoronavirus emergency, it should also be noted that circumstance that “forced” the Interior Ministry to extend and extend some projects in the field of reception of migrants. These are plans developed mainly within the Siproimi (ex Sprar) whose deadline was set for 30 June 2020.

Now, as Francesco Borgonovo pointed out on The truth, all projects that were due to end by this month of June have been extended until 31 December. A decision, that put black on white by a decree signed by the Minister of the Interior Luciana Lamorgese, which follows the provisions of the government in the decree Cura Italia, where precisely all the projects to be developed by June 30 in Siproimi have been extended until the end of this 2020.

An operation that has a not insignificant cost: to extend the projects until December 31 next, something like 170 million Euros has been allocated. A shower of money, which will soon arrive in the coffers of the municipalities. Bodies that could hardly guarantee meal vouchers and other expenses necessary for the less well-off classes during the lockdown, which will now receive important funds for the reception of migrants.

As said, most of the projects concern Siproimi, that is, the structures inherent to the “Protection system for holders of international protection and unaccompanied foreign minors”. These are those institutes that until 2018 were known as Sprar, a system then abolished with the approval of the first of the two security decrees wanted by the ex Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

According to this rule, currently in force despite the continuous “Promises” of cancellation or modification made by the current Giallorossi majority, “Siproimi” can access “holders of international protection and all unaccompanied foreign minors”. But not only: according to the security decree, holders of residence permits can also be hosted in these structures for: victims of violence or trafficking, victims of domestic violence, health reasons, victims of labor exploitation, calamities, acts of particular civil value.

There are several integration projects developed within the Siproimi so that, as mentioned, to prolong the activities of these institutes the government has put on the plate important figures, which arouse a certain impression especially during a phase marked by the serious economic crisis that developed after Covid.

As pointed out by La Verità, at least 501 projects will receive a total of 170 million Euros. Funds that will be distributed throughout the national territory. For example, there is talk of 991,713.51 Euros that will reach the municipality of Agrigento, center at Pistoia at least 512,764 Euros will fall. This is money that will be disbursed in two distinct moments: a first tranche in September and then another one in December.

According to the latest updates from the Ministry of the Interior, 22,299 migrants are currently housed in the Siproimi. So, on balance, each guest costs the Italian taxpayer an average of 7,623 Euros. Important figures as thousands of shopkeepers throughout the country struggle to survive their businesses and several families have been left without income. Or while, as happens from north to south, there are those who are still waiting for bonuses and layoffs to be able to bring home bread again.

The 170 million Euros allocated to Siproimi could for this reason become a political case and arouse controversy.
