Zeitz –
A work from Zeitz that is important in terms of culture and art history, but which has been badly affected, can now be restored. As the Museum Schloss Moritzburg announced on Wednesday evening, the dead portrait of Duke Moritz of Saxony (1619 to 1681) can be restored thanks to a grant from the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation.
Portrait of the dead from Moritzburg Castle is to be restored
As the Zeitz city administration, the owner of the Moritzburg Castle Museum, announced that the portrait of the dead is part of the museum’s collection of baroque portraits of the dead, which is one of the largest collections of courtly portraits of the dead in Germany.
The rarely exhibited evidence of baroque burial culture is a special treasure of the museum.
Of the total of 15 portraits of the dead in the museum’s possession, the painting to be restored is “the most important, as it shows the first Duke of the Saxon-Zeitz secondary school and builder of Moritzburg Castle”, which is depicted almost life-size.
Restorer with know-how
According to the announcement, the conservation of the dead portrait is in the hands of Zeitz restorer Mirko Negwer. He is no stranger to the region. Among other things, Negwer restored the painting of the autopsy of the Swedish King Gustav Adolf II in 2019, which hangs in the Weissenfels escort house.
Foundation donates 25,000 euros for restoration
For the restoration of the portrait of Duke Moritz von Sachsen-Zeitz in the dead, the Moritzburg Castle Museum has received a grant of 25,000 euros from the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation.
However, the city assumes that around 40,000 euros will be necessary for the entire project. That is why the city and the museum are calling for donations. A donation account has been set up at the Sparkasse des Burgenlandkreis, it says in the message. (mz)
