Mona Lisa in Rubik’s Cube by artist Invader sold at auction for 480,000 euros

Almost 300 Rubik’s Cube were required to complete the work Rubik Mona Lisa. Mona Lisa by French artist Invader was sold for 480,200 euros on Sunday, February 23, a world record for the street artist’s series of “object paintings”.

The work produced in 2005 quadrupled its estimate (between 120,000 and 150,000 euros) during a sale devoted to urban art at the Artcurial house on the Champs-Elysées, in Paris, which dispersed several works great contemporary street artists.

Mona Lisa in Rubik’s Cube, which reinterprets the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, is entirely composed with these 3D color cubes, an emblematic object of the 1980s.

Invader became known with his “Invasions” on the streets of 79 cities and 33 countries. And he gave a name to a current characterizing his works: rubikcubism. Rubik Mona Lisa is the first piece in a series revisiting the greatest paintings in art history: the Rubik Master Pieces. Of Luncheon on the Grass from Edouard Manet to The origin of the world by Gustave Courbet, Invader has already reproduced various pictorial works in Rubik’s Cube. Since 2005, numerous exhibitions have been devoted to the urban artist.
