Moisés Caicedo joins Chelsea in record-breaking Premier League transfer

Ecuadorian midfielder Moisés Caicedo has officially become a new signing for Chelsea, joining from Brighton for a Premier League record fee. The London team paid an astronomical 100 million pounds for the transfer, but the amount, including other bonuses, can rise to 115 million. The 21-year-old South American signed a long-term contract until 2031.

In recent days, Liverpool have also joined the game for Caiceda, who were willing to pay The Seagulls a total of 111 million pounds. But the player himself preferred a transfer to London, and during Sunday, all the parties involved agreed on everything essential. “I didn’t have to think twice when they called me from Chelsea,” said the Ecuadorian after signing his new contract.

Although Brighton will collect a fixed amount, which in the English top competition has only reached a three-digit number for the fourth time in history, the club should receive another 15 million pounds practically only on the basis of the matches played. It is thus expected that the bonus will be filled within a relatively short period of time. And if it is paid out, Caicedo will surpass the previous Premier League transfer record from January this year. Enzo Fernández also moved to Chelsea at that time, from Lisbon’s Benfica for 107 million.

For a sum of at least 100 million pounds, only the transfer of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa to Manchester City in 2021 and only recently that of Declan Rice from West Ham to Arsenal took place in the Premier League. “Moises has proven himself to be an outstanding player over the past 18 months,” Chelsea sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said in a statement, among others. “It’s a dream come true to be here. I can’t wait to get started,” added Caicedo.
