mods can infect your PC with viruses, CD Projekt warns

A new bug hits Cyberpunk 2077 – or more precisely its mods. CD Projekt explains that these additions can exploit a flaw that allows them to execute, through these mods, arbitrary code on your PC. Potentially infecting your computer with viruses. A patch is in preparation.

CD Projekt Red announces in a tweet the discovery of a security flaw around the mod system from Cyberpunk 2077. The publisher explains: “If you intend to use custom mods / recordings on PC, be careful. We learned the presence of a vulnerability in external DLL files that the game uses which can be used to execute code on PC ”.

Shortly after a release that we’ll just describe as chaotic, players managed to tweak their very first mods, without the help of CD Projekt Red. The first to have seen the light of day is a 3rd person mod that Cyberpunk 2077 is sorely lacking (see video at the end of the article). Players are indeed invited to deeply customize the look of their character.

Cyberpunk 2077: CD Projekt Red ensures that a new patch will be available soon

More all play is first person, which means you only see your character in mirrors and highlights. Shortly after this first mod, CD Projekt put online a suite of tools to facilitate game modifications. Already with some initial problems, mainly related to the unlimited creativity of the players.

CD Projekt had to block a mod that allowed players to have sex with Keanu Reeves. Despite the presence of this new bug, there is no point in panicking, especially if the mods you are using are made by developers you trust. If so, if you don’t trust the publisher of a mod, it might be time to uninstall it and scan your computer for viruses.

CD Projekt Red adds that “The problem will be addressed as soon as possible” in an update. “For now, please avoid using files from unknown sources”, concludes the editor.
