Moderna Disputes Potential Link to Heart Inflammation: “No Scientific Evidence” | medical

The American vaccine manufacturer Moderna disputes that its vaccine could possibly cause inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or the pericardium (pericarditis). Both the European Medicines Agency EMA and the American counterpart FDA are currently investigating a possible link. After reviewing the available data, “no causal relationship with the vaccine can be established,” Moderna said.

The possible side effect was first reported in Israel after vaccination with Pfizer/BioNTech, but was later recorded with the three other corona vaccines, including that of Moderna. Earlier on Friday, the EMA ruled that further research is needed to determine whether or not there is a causal relationship.

Moderna says it will follow up the reports closely and will work with health authorities to further clarify the matter. The EMA said it wants to make a final judgment by July. The US authorities will meet later this month on the issue.

In the United States so far, 216 cases of heart inflammation have been diagnosed after a first shot with an mRNA vaccine. Another 573 cases emerged after the second dose. Most patients respond well to treatment and more than eight in ten have made a full recovery.

About 130 million Americans have already received two doses of one of the two approved mRNA vaccines.
