Model S and Model X: Tesla offers on-board computer upgrade

Tesla offers individual owners of Model S and Model X an upgrade of their on-board computer. The so-called Media Control Unit (MCU1) can be exchanged for the new version MCU2 for $ 2,500. Vehicles built before March 2018 still have the older model.

The new on-board computer offers a number of options that were not available on the old model. Videos can be streamed and games displayed on the vehicle’s main screen, which are controlled with the steering wheel and controls of the car – neither, of course, while driving. The new hardware should also make the system react more smoothly. However, FM radio is then no longer available, music and radio are streamed over the Internet.

Tesla does not currently offer the update to all customers, but contacts selected users. According to a report by Electrek, preference is given to customers who have purchased the “full potential for autonomous driving” package. It is currently not known whether the package will also be offered to European drivers or a possible price.

Tesla changed its range information for Model S and Model X in mid-February 2020. In addition, the variant name Long Range became Long Range plus. According to the information, the range of the Model S in this variant is now equivalent to 628 km (EPA). Previously, 600 km were specified. The Model X goes 565 instead of 528 km.
