“Mobili-T Device Helps Patients with Dysphagia Following Throat Surgery, Says True Angle CEO”

For David Jamieson, the proposed technology provides expected support. The 61-year-old Edmontonian has suffered from dysphagia since undergoing cancer surgery. He explains that following his operation, he stopped eating in public and fed on a diet consisting mainly of liquids. If a piece of food is too big, I chokehe says.

According to True Angle President and CEO Jana Rieger, the device called Mobili-T is intended to help people like David Jamieson do the rehabilitation exercises needed to restore their ability to swallow.

The idea came to her when she accompanied a therapist who worked to rehabilitate patients who had difficulty swallowing following throat surgery.

Dysphagia is an extremely difficult emotional and physical problemshe explains, to the point where several people told her that they would have refused their operation if they had understood the effects.

Help from the Alberta Cancer Foundation

Thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Jana Rieger and her team developed Mobili-T, a device that fits under the chin and uses different sensors to assess the activity of throat and its muscles.

The sensors note the contraction of the muscles and the time during which this contraction takes place, explains Jana Rieger. The device then transmits the data to a smart phone app to show the results to users, who can then pass it on to their doctor.

This is what David Jamieson does, who says he finds the device a source of motivation to maintain the exercise program necessary for his rehabilitation.

True Angle is currently conducting clinical trials in the province and is working towards Health Canada approval.
