Mobile networks report record volumes of transmitted data on New Year’s Eve

In the O2 network on the last day of the year, the volume of transferred data increased by approximately 78 percent compared to last year. Instagram won in the volume of transferred data, where, according to Blanka Vokounová from the O2 press department, there was a year-on-year increase of 470 percent. O2 connected a record approximately 16.6 million calls on New Year’s Eve, about half a million more than last year. The busiest hour was between midnight and 01:00, when over 2.2 million calls were made. Compared to last year, the number of SMS decreased by 16 percent to about 8.3 million. The number of MMS was four percent lower, people sent 256,000.

Vodafone saw a 93 percent increase in data service usage on New Year’s Eve. The network connected 16 million calls, down 12 percent year on year. The highest telephone traffic was also between midnight and 01:00. At peak times, the operator registered about 1.8 million calls. Vodafone customers sent about six million text messages on New Year’s Eve, 23 percent less than last year. The number of MMS dropped by 26 percent to approximately 91,000.

Data traffic in the T-Mobile network increased by 47 percent compared to the previous New Year’s Eve. The number of calls remained virtually unchanged at over 22 million. In the first quarter of the New Year, however, it rose by about a quarter to 1.5 million calls. “As in the previous year, the volume of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s SMS decreased year-on-year, by more than two million from a total of 13.7 to 11.5 million, said Jiří Janeček on behalf of T-Mobile. The number of MMS decreased by about five percent to 311 000.

There are about 15 million active SIM cards in the Czech Republic.

New Year’s Eve celebrations were marked by the coronavirus pandemic. In this context, the government has ordered a curfew between 21:00 and 05:00, alcohol may not be consumed in public, and the number of participants in mass events is limited to two people.
