MLS Announces Major Management Changes for 2024 Season: Off-Field Handling, Timed Substitution, and VAR Calls

The MLS has announced three important management changes that will take effect starting this Saturday, April 20, when Inter Miami of Lionel Messi host Nashville SC on the ninth date of the national championship. These are “off-field handling”, “timed substitution” and “VAR calls in the stadium”.

The “off-field treatment” rule allows the medical staff time to assess and assist players in a less stressful environment. If the injured person remains lying for more than 15 seconds on the grass, the referee will stop the game. And when he is ready to take it off, the football player will stay outside for at least two minutes.

This allows matches to resume quickly. However, there are some exceptions such as cases of possible head injuries, goalkeeper injuries, serious medical incidents and foul play due to yellow or red cards.

At the same time, the “timed substitution”, increases the effective time of the game due to the changes of each team. If a player does not come out within 10 seconds, his substitute must wait a 60-second holding period before proceeding to the field of play at the next stoppage. This does not apply to injuries and substitutes.

Finally, “VAR in-stadium announcements” means that the decisions of the video referee system are explained by the referee to the fans on the pitch and to the spectators at home.

The MLS He explained that these three regulatory changes, which will add to the return-to-play equity protocol and the injury time clock, were previously announced during the 2024 pre-season, but were postponed due to labor negotiations between his ‘ Professional Referees Organization (PRO) and Professional Soccer Referees Association (PRSA).
