Mitch McConnell says the Trump political trial in the Senate could start next Tuesday | Univision Politics News

The leader of the Republican majority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, said Tuesday that the political trial of President Trump could begin within a week.

McConnell said that in the next few days the Senate will take the necessary measures to start the process, which will become official once the House of Representatives receives the two impeachment articles that were approved against Trump last December.

Hours earlier, the president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, announced that she will officially notify the Senate of the accusations against the president this week, although without specifying a fixed date.

The Republican leader said in a meeting with journalists at the Capitol that he hopes to receive the “impeachment” articles on Wednesday and that from there the preliminary adjustments will begin for the start of the process.

“We hope to achieve all that by consensus, which will put us at the start of the trial next Tuesday,” McConnell said.

The adjustments referred to by the Kentucky senator involve determining the times for the ‘managers’ or prosecutors sent by the House of Representatives to present the accusation against Trump and the president’s attorneys.

In addition, it will be discussed how the intervention of the senators and the “delicate matter” of the call for new witnesses, which the Democrats want but the majority of Republicans do not consider necessary (or convenient)
