WASHINGTON – Embassy Mission Russia in Washington, United States of America (USA) “blocked”. Bank accounts were closed and staff received threats, state news agency RIA quoted Russia’s ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, Sunday (24/4/2022).

“The embassy is basically blocked by a US government entity. The accounts of our two consulates in Houston and New York have been closed by Bank of America,” Antonov said as quoted by Reuters.

“We received threats, both by phone and in incoming letters. At some point even the exits from the embassy were blocked,” he added.

Russia and the US had been locked in a dispute over the size and function of each other’s diplomatic missions long before President Vladimir Putin launched what he called a “special military operation” against Ukraine on February 24.

Since then, Russian embassies in Europe have also come under pressure and more than 300 Russian staff have been expelled from European capitals. These conditions prompted Moscow to expel foreign diplomats from Russian territory in response.

Russia’s ambassador to Poland told Reuters last week the blocking of its embassy bank account last month could eventually prevent it from functioning, in which case Russia would stop the work of the Polish embassy in Moscow.

Western governments have imposed drastic sanctions on Russia for its actions in Ukraine, prompting Moscow to accuse them of frenzied Russophobia.
