Missile tests in North Korea: – US warns of Kim

On Thursday, the United States warned about test activity in North Korea. This is because they fear that Kim Jong-un and his regime will test a relatively new missile system. A senior official in the Biden administration has described it as a serious escalation, according to Financial Times.

The high-ranking official believes that North Korea shamelessly violates several of the UN Security Council resolutions, and fears that the test activity will increase tensions and destabilize the security situation in the region.

Associate Professor Henrik Hiim at the Department of Defense Studies at the Norwegian Defense College will not be very surprised if North Korea prepares to test a new intercontinental missile.

– It seems that the Americans experience the latest tests as possible preparations for testing a new intercontinental missile. If it is, it is not very surprising. This is because they know that North Korea has developed a new intercontinental missile that they probably want to test, Hiim tells Dagbladet and continues:

– North Korea itself has stated that they are trying to send satellites to space, but in practice this is a way of disguising that in reality it is an intercontinental missile.

Increased activity

Hiim has noticed a change.

– North Korea has had very high test activity this year. In total, they have completed nine missile tests. If they now test intercontinental missiles, it will be the first time since 2017, Hiim says and continues:

– This is because North Korea in 2017 placed restrictions on its own test activity in connection with the diplomatic processes that took place when Donald Trump was president of the United States. Later, however, they have said that this no longer applies.

Hiim says that such testing is absolutely necessary to develop new weapons.

– North Korea often conducts missile tests to check that the new systems are working, and not necessarily to provoke.

– What do you think is the reason why they have stepped up the test activity now?

– I think it is first and foremost because they have developed new weapons that they now want to test. In addition, the diplomatic processes that took place under Trump have gone into the ditch, which removes an obstacle that existed in the past.

Sanctions

U.S. authorities say they have chosen to share this information with their allies, partners and the public because they believe it may have a risk-reducing effect, according to the Financial Times. It was also the reason why US authorities chose to share intelligence with the public ahead of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In addition, US authorities believe that the world community as a whole must express its opposition to the development of this type of weapon. There is now talk of introducing new sanctions against North Korea.

– If North Korea conducts new tests of an intercontinental missile, the Americans are guaranteed to push for the introduction of new sanctions. But it remains to be seen whether the Americans can manage to get new sanctions through the Security Council, says Hiim and continues:

– They managed it in 2017, but it is not certain that it will be as easy to make it happen again. This is because a lot of attention is focused on the Ukraine war and the relationship between the USA and China has become far worse than it was in 2017.

On Monday, the Security Council held an emergency meeting on test activity in North Korea. The United States tried to get the member states to rally around a statement that went against the test activity, but they failed to get China and Russia to join.

Ukraine War

The increased test activity in North Korea is not necessarily related to the fact that a lot of attention is paid to the war in Ukraine, Hiim believes.

– It may be that North Korea thinks that the conflict will come conveniently, but it may also be that they would have carried out these tests anyway, Hiim says and continues:

– The increased test activity has been going on for some time, and North Korea has indicated for some time that they want to test a system for intercontinental missiles. It is not certain that this is happening because the eyes of the world are fixed elsewhere now.

The UN General Assembly recently passed a resolution demanding that Russia withdraw its military forces from Ukraine. North Korea voted against the resolution along with Belarus, Russia, Eritrea and Syria.
