International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) will follow the political situation in Belarus, where there are protests against the results of the presidential election, and does not rule out the possibility of postponing next year’s World Hockey Championship (WC) from Minsk to another country.

“The World Ice Hockey Championship is due to take place next spring in Riga and Minsk. However, IIHF Vice President Kalervo Kummola said he has raised the issue of the venue after the political protests in Belarus,” he said. Kummola reported on the political and epidemiological situation in Belarus at the IIHF meeting on 11 August.
“In two weeks, we will see what happens in Belarus – whether the situation calms down or not,” the IIHF president said after the Kummola report. Rene Fasel.
“Kummola also said that his views were not in line with the position of the Belarusian representative, who he said was not worth confusing politics with sports,” the media reported.
Kummola was not convinced that the political situation in Belarus and the attitude towards the new coronavirus pandemic would lead to the deprivation of the right to host the championship for Minsk, as the country has invested heavily in the development of hockey. He suggested waiting two weeks before assessing the situation.
