Minsalud imparts guidelines for food and medicine establishments

The Ministry of Health, as a measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19, established a series of guidelines for food and medicine establishments that must be implemented immediately.

The protocol dictates that the managers of the establishments must provide personal protection elements to their work equipment, especially face masks or gloves if required. Likewise, they must guarantee the availability of cleaning and disinfection elements such as drinking water, soap, antibacterial gel and disposable towels. And if any employee has flu symptoms, they should be isolated and report to the health authority.

In addition, from now on the tastings in supermarkets are suspended. In the same sense, the actions of permanent cleaning and disinfection of points of sale and payment, common areas, cars, market baskets, gondolas, handrails, among other surfaces and high-frequency sites, should be strengthened. Restaurants must do the same with kitchen utensils, containers, vehicles, tables, preparation areas, chairs and door knobs.

Regarding the establishments dedicated to the trade of pharmaceutical products, such as drugstores, they must seek the supply of basic necessities and, in turn, call for restraint on the part of the users in the acquisition of an adequate number of units per product.

This measure covers establishments in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage sector, such as supermarkets, restaurants, shops, food courts, bakeries, butchers, market places, production plants, drugstores and other related ones.

The entity called for the owners and managers of these businesses to apply the defined procedures to frequently verify the health status of their workers and promote self-care measures such as hand washing. Likewise, he asked them to recommend to clients the washing of hands before the consumption of food, once they have the conditions and elements for this practice.

Elisa Cadena, deputy director of Nutritional Health, Food and Beverages of the Ministry, assured that “the purpose is to provide the necessary guidelines to the sector and that are required to be implemented in the production chain (plants), marketing (supermarkets and department stores), sale ( restaurants) and consumption (household) of pharmaceutical products, food and beverages ”.

The norm also defines the measures towards consumers in the home, for example, insists that they should ensure that only one person goes out to make the necessary purchases, that they pay by card to avoid cash and that they consume food at home.
