Minsa: Everything you need to know about vaccination of children between 5 and 11 years of age against COVID-19

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) will start this Monday, January 24, the campaign of vaccination against COVID-19 to boys and girls from 5 to 11 years of age in Metropolitan Lima, Callao, Lima Region, Ica and Junín.

“With the 996,000 doses of pediatric vaccine who have arrived in the country will begin to vaccinate children ages 10 and 11 and those ages 5 to 11 who live with comorbidities”, indicated the Director of Immunizations of the Minsa, Gabriela Jiménez Quinteros.

Vaccination Priorities and Requirements

In accordance with the protocol established for this new process of vaccination, the first group to be vaccinated are people with Down syndrome, rare and orphan diseases, mental and neurodevelopmental disorders, people waiting for or with organ transplants, cancer patients, type II and III obesity, type I and II diabetes, with rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, hemodialysis and chronic kidney diseases and people with TB and living with HIV.

In this sense, the lawyer Jiménez Quinteros explained that parents must bring some evidence from a prescription, medical certificate or a document that proves if they are undergoing treatment and establishes the diagnosis. In addition, he mentioned that there are certain conditions that are not going to request any certification that are visibly observed, such as children with Down or those who may have a problem related to neurodevelopmental diseases, among others.

In parallel, it is also will vaccinate to the group of minors between 10 and 11 years of age from the urban sector and the rest of the urban sector. Minors must be accompanied by their parents, a proxy or relative over 18 years of age and must show their Identity Document (DNI) and also that of the child.

In addition, the official minsa He commented that if the child does not have a DNI, the parent or companion may present the birth certificate, baptismal certificate, report card from their educational institution or the regular vaccination card. “These documents are going to be valid and we are going to give all the facilities so that children can be vaccinated,” he said.

He also stated that parents will be able to enter the digital platform “Pongo el Hombro” https://consultas.pongoelhombro.gob.pe, where they will identify the list of educational institutions or vaccination centers closest to their home.

Importance of vaccination

Regarding the importance of vaccination, the director of Immunizations explained that the person who is vaccinated has less chance of infecting other people and even generate its own protective defense for its own body. “The more vaccinated population, the less possibility of contagion there is, so it is important to bet on vaccination,” he said.
