Minister of Trade Blunts Reasons for Allowing TikTok Duet with Tokopedia – Kompas.com

KOMPAS.com – Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan said that his party allows TikTok to collaborate with local players in Indonesia.

His statement responded to information that TikTok plans to collaborate with GoTo’s electronic commerce (e-commerce) company Tokopedia.

“Can. If we collaborate with local people, we can,” said Zulkifli Hasan when met after the launch of the White Paper on the National Strategy for Development of the Indonesian Digital Economy 2030 in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Thursday (7/12/2023).

According to him, so far no permit has been submitted by TikTok regarding the implementation of e-commerce, so no permits have been processed by the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM).

However, he underlined that the licensing that TikTok can do is in the form of a cooperation scheme, not a new licensing.

“If it is a new permit, it is not possible. But, if you cooperate with the local, it’s possible,” he added.

Apart from that, he also emphasized that the government’s policy regarding TikTok does not explicitly prohibit the operation of the platform, but the policy aims at regulating and structuring social commerce in Indonesia.

“So, whoever meets the rules and regulations that we set together, go ahead. “Other countries may prohibit it, but we don’t, we regulate it,” explained Zulkifli.

On a separate occasion, Deputy Minister of Trade (Wamendag) Jerry Sambuaga said that TikTok Shop was previously closed because the platform did not comply with regulations, after becoming a social media that carried out transactions like e-Commerce.

Jerry said that the action taken by the government some time ago against TikTok Shop was an effort to regulate that social media and e-commerce cannot be combined in function as per Minister of Home Affairs Regulation (Permendag) Number 31 of 2023.

The Ministry of Trade also invited TikTok Shop to immediately take care of e-commerce licensing if it wants to resume electronic buying and selling activities.

The Ministry of Trade frees TikTok Shop to collaborate with any electronic commerce or e-Commerce platform as long as it complies with applicable regulations and procedures in Indonesia.
