Minister of State Jos van Kemenade (PvdA) passed away Interior

From 1973 to 1977, Van Kemenade was Minister of Education and Science in the Den Uyl cabinet. He held that position again in 1981 and 1982, this time in the Van Agt II cabinet. In the meantime, he was a member of the House of Representatives and a party secretary.

Van Kemenade was then mayor of Eindhoven (1988 – 1992) and commissioner of the Queen in Noord-Holland (1992 – 2002). That last year he was appointed Minister of State. This is an honorary title for life and, in exceptional cases, is granted to people who have made a difference in the administrative area.

Van Kemenade, born on March 6, 1937, was a much sought after committee chairman and held many positions outside of politics. He obtained his PhD in 1968 on a study of Catholics and their education and was a professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Catholic University of Nijmegen, the University of Groningen and the Open University.
