Minister of Labor and Inclusion Prioritizes Inclusion in Working Life: Focus Shifts from Benefits

The Minister of Labor and Inclusion answers ABC Nyheter that she wants to focus more on inclusion in working life and not just on benefits.

The Minister for Labor and Inclusion now replies that she wants to focus more on inclusion in working life and not just on benefits.

Recently, there has been a lot of debate about the line of work and the level of performance in Norway.

Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum’s (Sp) financial speech at the presentation of the state budget for 2024 has not gone unnoticed, and many have reacted to how disabled people, the sick and other disadvantaged people feel they are portrayed. Among other things, the hashtag #jegharståtopp has taken off on X/Twitter, and the AAP action in particular has been very clear in its criticism of Vedum’s statement that it “must be worth getting up in the morning”.

Vedum responded this week to the criticism.

– It is allowed to be critical, but they only hear half the reasoning. We are concerned that people should be in work, and to get as many people as possible into work, said the finance minister to ABC Nyheter.

Brenna answers: Many outside the working world

The new Minister for Employment and Inclusion Tonje Brenna (Ap) has also become part of the debate.

Her position is clear.

In an email to ABC Nyheter, Brenna now replies that one should focus more on inclusion in working life, and not just focus on benefits:

– Being in work is good for the individual, and it is good for society. But if we are to secure those who cannot work, both today and for a long time to come, many will probably have to work. Today, many people are outside the working world, writes Tonje Brenna.

– We have a goal that more disabled people who can work to a greater extent should be able to combine work income with disability benefits, she elaborates.

Labor market measures

Brenna writes that they must constantly assess whether there is room for improvement in the system today, so that even more people can be brought in and give security to those who cannot work.

She also points out that the Government is already doing a lot:

– We will spend almost NOK 11 billion on labor market measures in 2024. These are various measures NAV offers that help people get into work or contribute to them being able to keep their jobs, she writes.

The younger generation

Furthermore, the Minister for Employment and Inclusion directs the issue towards the younger generation:

– It is particularly worrying that it concerns an increasing number of young people. We have to help more of them into work or education, she writes.

Brenna goes on to say that the government has put a youth guarantee in place:

– It guarantees everyone under the age of 30 who needs help to get into work or education, a personal supervisor and tailored and close follow-up from NAV. NAV is also starting an experiment with work-oriented disability benefits for young disabled people, writes Brenna.

Need a lift

Tonje Brenna also writes that of course they must also take care of those among us who for various reasons cannot work.

Rødt representative Mímir Kristjánsson pointed out to ABC Nyheter this week that even if the budget increases, it does not mean that the benefits do. This is because more people are entitled to disability benefits.

– There is not a penny more for social security in this budget. What is needed is a boost where the lowest social security benefits and pensions will be stepped up to at least the poverty line, he writes.
