Minister Bruins for Medical Care finds it terrible that people with an Asian appearance are discriminated against because of the corona virus. In the House of Representatives, he called on everyone to stand up against this.
Bruins responded to questions from GroenLinks MP Ellemeet and others. She said that people with Asian appearance are being discriminated against on a large scale. For example, she heard from a girl that people in the tram pulled their sweater over their mouths when they saw her.
Ellemeet asked the minister if he would like to make a clear statement about this. Bruins said that he wants to do this several times in the coming days, also outside the Lower House.
Keukenhof
The minister said he very much agreed that this is not part of a decent society. “Discrimination does not concern people. We must ensure that it does not occur. We all have a role to play.”
Bruins is not going to close events and attractions that attract many Chinese tourists, such as the Keukenhof. The PVV wanted to know if this would be wise. The minister finds it unnecessary, because the risk of people being infected in the Keukenhof is very small. Moreover, such a measure is discriminatory and stigmatizing, he said.
