Two midwives from the neonatology department of the regional hospital in Veliko Tarnovo have resigned and are leaving. The reason – the insultingly low salaries they receive. In social media posts, they said they were leaving in protest, outraged by the state’s treatment of them.
Midwives Milena Manova and Alexandrina Siderova have publicly announced that they are quitting their jobs. Although they love their work and consider it a vocation, their wages are so low that they can no longer cover even their basic needs.
“Extremely intensive work, extremely specific, extremely difficult both for work and for learning, this is not learned in three days for this money. This is a problem of the entire health care, not only of this regional hospital, it is a problem of all regional hospitals”, he commented midwife Milena Manova.
“It’s insulting because it’s very responsible here. We don’t want some huge pay, we’re talking about some amounts that have been accepted under a collective labor agreement, 1,400 to 1,500 basic salary. And until society wakes up, what can we ask from the hospital?” , asked midwife Alexandrina Siderova.
Low salaries are among the most pressing problems of regional hospitals, management says, and therefore options are constantly being sought.
“We are working on the matter, the decision has been made and there will be a significant increase in wages from our internal reserves, just a larger than 20 percent increase Veliko Tarnovo Hospital cannot afford without risking financial stability. We expect some positive change after the new year in the new budget, and then we hope to make an increase of another 18 percent,” said MOBAL director Dr. Stefan Cherkezov.
Main reasons for the inability of public hospitals to pay high salaries are the underfunded clinical pathways, as well as the large number of uninsured patients whose treatment costs are covered by the hospitals.
